Why is PS4 more expensive than PS5?

The PlayStation 5 came out in late 2020. Two years later, you'd expect it to be less expensive now. But, as it turns out, the PS5 is curbing the long-standing trend of price cuts. Instead, it will get a hefty price hike going forward - effective immediately.

Why is PS4 more expensive than PS5?
Unless you're in Japan or in the United States, the price hike for the PS5 is effective immediately.

Why is PS4 more expensive than PS5?

Here's the full list of all the regions affected by the PS5 price increase and by how much:

  • Europe: 549.99 euros (disc version) and 449.99 euros (digital version)
  • UK: £479.99 (disc version) and £399.99 (digital version)
  • Japan: 54,980 yen (disc version) and 44,980 yen (digital version)
  • China: 4,299 yuan (disc version) and 3,499 yuan (digital version)
  • Australia: 799.95 Australian dollars (disc version) and 649.95 Australian dollars (digital version)
  • Mexico: 14,999 Mexican pesos (disc version) and 12,499 Mexican pesos (digital version)
  • Canada: 649.99 Canadian dollars (disc version) and 519.99 Canadian dollars (digital version)

Sony confirmed the price hike in an official blog post, attributing the move to "challenging economic conditions." Surprisingly enough, the US market is safe from the PS5 price hike.

All things considered, the move to make the PS5 around 10% more expensive than before isn't totally unexpected, even if it's unprecedented. The fact is that Sony has already alluded to selling the PS5 at a higher price earlier this year after reporting a slight financial decline in Q1.

Despite the unfortunate news, we don't see it affecting the demand for the PS5. Sony is still hard-pressed to sell enough PS5 units to meet the market. Even though the PS5 hasn't outsold the Xbox Series S/X as much as the PS4 did to the Xbox One, it all feels like Sony is only a supply chain solution away from doing the same thing again.

As long as Sony keeps on producing games like Demon's Souls, the PS5 will continue selling well for the rest of the current generation.

If nothing else, we're surprised that the PS5 is still selling just as well as it does. You have to keep in mind that it launched during a pandemic with a worldwide chip shortage while facing an inflation crisis.

Ultimately, we're curious to see how Microsoft responds to Sony's latest announcement. It's worth noting that one of the main reasons why the Xbox 360 gained so much traction was its value - it sold at $299 at launch, nearly half the $499 sticker price for the PS3. Microsoft could use this opportunity to drive its "value" offering more by positioning the Xbox Series X as the cheaper and better console. Not to mention, the Game Pass continues to be solid with rumors of Ubisoft+ coming soon.

Speaking of Sony, you might want to keep an eye out for the PSVR2 and DualSense Edge. The former is expected to come out in 2023 with the latter speculated to follow soon after.

From a first-party point of view at least, PS5 games are going to be more expensive than they were on PS4.

We got our first look at the first-party PS5 launch lineup today and it’s definitely beefier than expected, but it also brought confirmation that first-party PS5 games are going to be more expensive.

Games such as Demon’s Souls and Destruction AllStars will have an RRP of $124.95 in Australia. Miles Morales will have an RRP of $94.95 (which seems like a lot given the fact it’s a shorter title) whilst Sackboy: A Big Adventure is coming in at $109.95 (a game that probably would have been around the $60-$80 mark if it released on PS4).

So far, Amazon has already dropped the price of Demon’s Souls to $119, Destruction All Stars to $119 and Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales has dropped to $79. Australia is a lot more discount happy than other regions, so I doubt we’ll be paying these prices too often.

Ultimately, games are most costly than ever to create right now, and games have definitely cost more in the past, so it’s an understandable move, but it’s definitely going to give games such as Destruction AllStars and Sackboy: A Big Adventure a bigger barrier of entry (outside of a $749 console purchase). It’s worth mentioning that Sony announced PlayStation Plus Collection today which will bring 17 PS4 games to PS5 free of charge to PlayStation Plus subscribers, so it’s not all bad news.

RRP OF ALL THE FIRST PARTY PS5 GAMES AT LAUNCH

  1. Demon’s Souls– $124.95 AUD (RRP)
  2. Destruction AllStars – $124.95 AUD (RRP)
  3. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales– $94.95 AUD (RRP)
  4. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition) – $124.95 AUD (RRP)
  5. Sackboy A Big Adventure – $109.95 AUD (RRP)

“Sony CEO Jim Ryan believes $70/£70 is a fair price for PS5 games.” – Telegraph UK

There has been an ongoing dispute regarding the pricing for the top PS5 games. Game pricing is a big factor According to the article, PS5 games are believed to be more expensive than PS4, is this correct? Well, Eebz has a way to prove this…

Eebz tracks pricing for electronics throughout their product life cycle. This feature allows us to track games on different platforms across hundreds of markets worldwide. Using Eebz ability to work out average pricing for games, we calculated PS5 vs PS4 across multiple markets in Europe and the USA.

Why is PS4 more expensive than PS5?

What does this mean?

Eebz removes VAT to allow for easy comparison between large and small markets. In this case, we analysed Germany, the USA, and the UK. We also converted at a standard exchange rate.

Interestingly enough, the current average price shows that PS5 is in fact marginally cheaper in the UK and the US. This is likely due to newly released discounting and product mix, with cheaper titles like ‘Puyo Puyo Tetris 2’ having a higher impact.

In contrast, games in Germany have a slightly higher average price across markets, resulting in an upscale for PS5 game pricing.

Eebz overall average reveals that PS5 games are more expensive on average, however, PS4 is not far behind with only a €0.45 difference. It would be fair to say the new-gen games are generously priced, considering their game pricing is similar to a 7-year-old console.

So which title is the most expensive?

The pricing of games can be a daunting factor for gamers. In accordance with overall average pricing across the 3 markets, Eebz has determined the top 3 most expensive and cheapest PS5 titles in the 3 markets:

Top 3 most expensive games on average: 1. Demon Souls (€79.51 in the UK) 2. Godfall (€82.61 in Germany)

3. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (€79.42 in Germany)

The cheapest games on average (cheapest first):
1. Spirit of the North (€29.84 in the UK) 2. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2: The Ultimate Puzzle Match (€35.86 in the USA)

3. Maneater (€35.86 in the USA)

Pricing variances…why is the scale so large?

Inexpensive games like Maneater are not being carried to the same level on PS4. Eebz ranging analysis shows 30% of PS5 retailers carrying Puyo Puyo Tetris. A title of this caliber will only be in a handful of retailers, possibly just online.

Correspondingly, big titles like Demon Souls are in high demand, thus it is one of the reasons they are priced higher. This results in an average price drop, thereby PS5 games are marginally higher than PS4.

In conclusion, PS4 and PS5 software retailers are in tight competition with one another shown from the close-knit pricing results. Game pricing is an interesting aspect to monitor, especially when looking into specific markets and across platforms.

Eebz ranging analysis helps to provide valid pieces of information to resolve pricing disputes. Although this makes us wonder, how close would the game pricing be for Xbox and PlayStation?
