What state has the most snow

Of the 51 largest American cities, two are shovelling far more snow than any of the rest. Rochester, New York gets the most snow among major cities in the United States, with a yearly average of over 100 inches (over 255 centimetres). Nearly eight feet of snow also buries nearby Buffalo in a typical year.

The third-ranking major US city for snow doesn't even come close to Buffalo and Rochester. Compared with the northern New York state cities, Cleveland, Ohio receives just two-thirds the amount of snow. For 16 of the 51 largest US cities, the annual snowfall normally adds up to over two feet (60 centimetres).

Major cities included in these snowfall rankings represent the 51 metropolitan areas in the United States with the biggest populations, all those with over one million people in 2010, according to the US Census Bureau. A complete list of America's 51 largest urban centers is available here.

There are some smaller cities that get even more snow than Rochester. Most notable is Syracuse New York with an average of 128 inches of snow a year, and Erie Pennsylvania which receives 104 inches of snow annually.

The snowfall totals are averages based on weather data collected from 1991 to 2020 for the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. You can also view a summary of snow averages for all major US cities and recent snowfall amounts.

According to the National Climatic Data Center, Syracuse in New York receives the most snowfall on an average annually. The average snowfall recorded in this state is 123.8 inches a year. Other states that follow in terms of the highest average snowfall are Wyoming, Vermont, West Virginia and Alaska, all four of which recorded an average of 60-70 inches of snow each year.

New York, on an average, receives 66 days of snowfall each year, while Wyoming and Vermont receive snowfall for an average of 54 days and Alaska 48 days each year.

On the other end of the spectrum with the least amount of snowfall are Florida, Louisiana and Hawaii. These states received less than one inch of snowfall last year. Hawaii receives no snowfall at all during the year as it is located in the low latitude area.

Average amount of snowfall in many of the states varies widely. Therefore, an accurate state wide average isn’t easily available. That being said, find below a chart showing the amount of snowfall in all 50 states of America, the data of which was populated considering the average snowfall for almost three decades from 1981 to 2010.

As seen above, states such as Kansas, Kentucky, Virginia, New Mexico, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Washington, Oregon, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Arizona receive less than 10 days of snowfall each year. People living in these places would not normally require a snowblower.

New York, which normally records the highest average snowfall, also records lesser amounts of snowfall (averaging between 22.7 to 37.9 inches of snow each year) a single stage battery operated snow blower may be appropriate for these areas.

In places such as Brooklyn, JFK Airport, Bridgehampton-Long Island, La Guardia Airport, Brookhaven-Long Island, Poughkeepsie and Elmira.

Places such as Watertown, Old Forge, Syracuse and Lake Placid, on the other hand, all recorded over 100 inches of snowfall on an average, that would definitely be a reason to have a powerful gas powered two stage snow blower available.

Average Snowfall in Wyoming

Does it snow in Wyoming? You betcha!, Wyoming places second after New York, averaging 91.4 inches of snowfall each year.

Places such as Yellowstone Park, Old Faithful, Yellowstone Lake, Moran and Moose averaged snowfall of over 160 inches on an average each year.

Third on the list, Vermont usually has an average snowfall of 82 inches each year.

Places in Vermont that have recorded high averages are Cavendish with 85.2 inches, Woodstock with 80.8 inches, Rutland with 72.9 inches, Montpelier with 94.2 inches, Rochester, South Lincoln with 124.3 inches, Mount Mansfield with 243.6 inches and St Albans with 80.6 inches.

Average Snowfall in Alaska

The state of Alaska that comes in at number four has an average of 74.5 inches of snowfall on an average each year.

The yearly average in its popular cities was 262.4 inches recorded in Haines, 143.4 inches recorded in Yakutat situated on the northern coast of the Gulf of Alaska and 326.3 recorded in Valdez.

Places such as Annette Island, Juneau, Sitka, Anchorage, Gulkana, Homer and Seward recorded an average between 32 and 74 inches of snowfall for the year.

Other States With Notable Snowfall

Other states that featured in the top 10 with an average snowfall between 50 and 60 inches are West Virginia, Maine, New Hampshire, Utah, Minnesota and North Dakota.

Snowshoe in West Virginia recorded the highest average for the state at 159 inches. In Maine, it was Rangeley that recorded close to 121. 3 inches as the highest average for the state. In New Hampshire, Mount Washington recorded the highest average at 126.1 inches and in Utah, it was Brighton, Silver Lake that recorded the highest average at 411.1 inches of snowfall

States that received an average of 30 to 40 inches of snowfall each year are South Dakota, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Montana, Iowa and Rhode Island, making a battery powered snow thrower a good choice for these locations.

States such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Nebraska, Illinois, Nevada, Delaware and Maryland received an average snowfall of 20- 30 inches each year.

Idaho, Colorado, Missouri, New Jersey, Kansas, Kentucky and Virginia received an average of 10-20 inches each year and states such as New Mexico, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Washington, Oregon, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Arizona recorded less than 1 to 10 inches of snowfall.
