Kenapa tidak ada Microsoft Windows 9?

KOMPAS.com - Microsoft membuat sedikit kejutan ketika memperkenalkan Windows versi berikutnya minggu ini. Berbeda dari perkiraan sebelumnya, sistem operasi yang bakal digunakan oleh PC, smartphone, dan tablet itu bukan bernama Windows 9, melainkan "Windows 10".

Alasan pasti mengapa Microsoft melompati angka "9" dengan Windows 10 tidak diketahui. Namun seorang mantan developer Microsoft yang dikutip oleh Gizmodo menjelaskan bahwa pemilihan nama tersebut disebabkan oleh sebuah "kesalahan" sederhana.

Di forum online Reddit, sang developer menjelaskan bahwa sebuah aplikasi mendeteksi versi Windows yang dipakai pengguna dengan cara melihat angka pertama dari nama sistem operasi yang bersangkutan.

Menurut dia, potongan kode yang digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi versi Windows adalah:

Dengan kata lain, jika nama versi yang tertulis adalah "Windows 9", maka aplikasi akan beranggapan bahwa versi Windows yang dijalankan oleh pengguna adalah "Windows 95" atau "Windows 98" yang sudah berumur belasan tahun. Bila nama "Windows 9" tetap dipakai akan "berbahaya" alias berpotensi menimbulkan kendala kompatibilitas.

Nah, solusi praktisnya adalah dengan melompati nama Windows 9 yang menjadi masalah dan langsung menggunakan embel-embel angka 10.

Entah apa yang menjadi akar persoalan. Bisa jadi para pengembang Windows 95/98 dulu tak berpikir panjang bahwa bakal ada versi Windows lain yang memakai awalan angka "9".

Hal semacam ini juga pernah terjadi dengan bug "Y2K" yang sempat bikin heboh sewaktu pergantian milenium 14 tahun lalu.

Kala itu sistem penanggalan komputer yang hanya mengidentifikasi tahun berdasarkan dua angka terakhir (misalnya "98" untuk tahun "1998") dikhawatirkan mengalami kebingungan antara tahun 1900 dan 2000.

Microsoft sendiri menyebut, sengaja melangkahi penamaan Windows 9 karena adanya perubahan besar-besaran yang mereka lakukan, tidak sekadar pembaruan minor. "Kami ingin pengguna Windows 7 merasakan bahwa selama ini mereka mengemudikan Prius generasi pertama, dan Windows 10 itu bagaikan Tesla," ujar Joe Belfiore,  Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group,  Microsoft.

KOMPAS.com - Awal Oktober, MIcrosoft secara resmi mengumumkan sistem operasi Windows berikutnya. Pengumuman itu mengejutkan karena nama sistem operasi yang bersangkutan bukan Windows 9 seperti diperkirakan sebelumnya, melainkan Windows 10.

Semenjak itu telah banyak muncul pertanyaan mengenai keputusan Microsoft untuk melompati angka “9”. Salah satu penjelasaan terbaru mengenai misteri ini diperoleh dari wakil presiden korporat Microsoft Windows, Tony Prophet.

“(Nama Windows 9) datang, lalu menghilang,” kata Prophet yang dikutip oleh Business Insider minggu ini. Maksudnya, pihak Microsoft sempat mempertimbangkan nama Windows 9, tapi kemudian tak jadi memakai.

Apa sebabnya? Microsoft rupanya tak mau pengguna mengasosiasikan Windows versi verikutnya dengan Windows 8 yang terlanjur menuai reputasi buruk. Angka “9” dipandang terlalu dekat dengan angka “8” sehingga bisa mengesankan bahwa perubahan pada sistem operasi baru itu tidak signifikan.

Padahal, menurut Prophet, Windows 10 adalah sebuah “langkah besar” dari Windows 8.1 yang mendahuluinya.

“Windows 10 bakal menjadi lompatan. Kami mencoba menciptakan satu platform, sebuah ekosistem yang bisa menyatukan sebanyak mungkin jenis perangkat dari komputer kecil Internet of Thiings, hingga tablet, ponsel, PC, dan Xbox,” jelas Prophet.

Sebagai bagian dari pengembangan Windows 10, versi “beta” dari sistem operasi ini yang dinamai Technology Preview disalurkan ke pengguna untuk dicoba. Microsoft kemudian mengumpulkan dan mempelajari masukan yang diperoleh dari para pemakai awal tersebut.

Sejauh ini, Windows 10 Technology Preview sudah diunduh oleh lebih dari 1 juta kali sehingga Microsoft pun kebanjiran masukan dari pengguna. Prophet mengatakan pihaknya siap mengolah segala macam input itu ke dalam produk final nanti.

“Kami sudah menjalankan prosesnya. Kami telah memiliki satu juta orang yang memakai (Windows 10 Technology Preview) dan kami siap mendengarkan,” pungkasnya.
