Tohru Honda, a high school student, decides to live with her grandfather when her mother is killed in a car crash. Renovations on the house and an unsupportive, nasty family member force her to temporarily leave her grandfather’s home.

Tohru refuses the invitation to stay with one of her two close friends because she does not want to impose on them. Tohru begins living in a tent to support herself because she has nowhere else to go.

When Tohru finds the Sohma family’s secret, she agrees not to tell anybody and is permitted to continue living with them. Although the Sohma curse is considerably deeper and darker than Tohru initially believes, her presence and acceptance quickly become a significant, good impact on those possessed by the zodiac.

She goes out to break the curse and meets and finds the Sohma’s vengeful zodiac spirits, including their leader, Akito, who holds the role of “God” in Chinese folklore and who both keeps the family together and chains them to their spirits.
