What to do if Nest is already connected to an account?

Last Updated Aug 25, 2022

We live in a digital age where smart home technology can do amazing things. The Nest Thermostat is one of the newest products on the market, which allows individuals and families to take control of their home’s heating and cooling—remotely.

How do you change the owner of your Nest Thermostat? Changing the owner on your Google Nest Thermostat requires you to first remove the product from your account. This allows a new user to take over and add the device to their account instead.

This article provides some great information about the Nest Thermostat and how you can manage user settings in the Nest app.

Changing the Owner of Your Nest Learning Thermostat

Google is helping us create a more digital, innovative, and interactive home with its Nest Smart Home products. One of the most popular, the Nest Thermostat, helps individuals and homeowners control their house’s heating and cooling a new, fun way.

The Nest Thermostat can learn your heating and cooling habits by paying attention to and recording the settings you frequently use. After just a week of learning you and your family’s habits, the Thermostat can create an automated schedule for your heat and cooling. The goal is to help you save energy for your home—and the environment!

The Eco Temperature mode switches on when it senses that you’re away from the home. This automates the best temperatures to heat or cool your home in order to save energy. You can also access Eco mode when you’re home.

You can tell that this mode is on when you see the green leaf on the screen. The green leaf on the thermostat screen appears to help you and your family members learn how to save energy. You can track those energy savings inside the Nest app.

Unlike some other Nest devices, the Nest Learning Thermostat can work without having to add an owner account. You can simply use the thermostat dial on your wall to control your heat and air conditioning. However, you will need an account to control certain features, including:

  • Remote thermostat control on your smartphone
  • Push notifications on your phone
  • Home/ Away Assist

If you move homes or decide to give your Nest Thermostat to another person, you may decide to name a new owner on the device. To change the owner of your Nest Thermostat, you must first remove your account from the device. When you do this, you will lose some capabilities and permissions to control it.

  1. In the Nest app, select the Home you’d like to edit. (This step applies to those who have more than one home on their Nest account.)
  2.  In Settings, tap the product you’d like to remove.
  3. Scroll down to select Remove Nest Thermostat.
  4. Confirm your choice.

If you do not plan on using your Nest Thermostat again, you’ll have to perform a factory reset. This will clear out all the settings you have created in order to allow a new user to start over with the product setup. This is useful if you’re moving out of your home or need to install your thermostat in a new location.

Before you reset your Nest Thermostat, however, be sure to write down your settings so you can access them in the future if you need to. On your thermostat, go to Settings > Equipment to record your system wires, heating type, and Safety Temperature settings.

To perform a factory reset on your Thermostat follow these steps:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to access the Quick View menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Turn the ring to Reset and press to select.
  4. Choose All Settings, which will reset all of your personal settings and reset the device to default settings.

About User Settings on Your Google Nest Thermostat

The Nest Thermostat allows you to access basic settings like temperature control on the device itself. However, if you want to access remote controls from your smartphone, you’ll need to create an account and add any other users in the home you’d like to also have that access.

Check out some useful information about these Nest and Google accounts:

Migrating Your Nest Account to Google

When you’re deciding to change your Nest Thermostat’s owner, it’s important to consider an update Google has recently implemented to user accounts. Google has recommended that all users of Nest Home products migrate their accounts to Google. Since this new update, regular users now have the same broad rights and permissions as the owner of the device.

If you do not have a Google account, it’s recommended that you create one. If you already have a Google account, you can use it to set up any Nest products you have. You may already have a Google account if you’ve used any other Google products (like YouTube) on the internet.

When you switch your Nest account to a Google account, you’ll only have to log in to one unified account to manage your devices and their security. Google’s goal in this is to create a more seamless Smart Home experience, with the capability to integrate multiple Nest and Google Assistant products. For instance, your Google Home can connect with your Nest Thermostat so you can give the command, “Hey Google, turn the air conditioning on to 75 degrees.”

After you migrate to a Google account, all members of your household will have the same permissions and control as the original owner. They can add or remove devices, change device settings, link to other services, and add or remove users. So, when adding users to your Home, it’s important to make sure they are trusted family and/ or friends.

What Happens after Removing Your Account

Because your Thermostat can function without an account, you still have access to many capabilities after you remove your account from your Nest Thermostat device.

The Thermostat ring on your wall will still be able to:

  • Control the temperature in your home
  • Sense motion in your home to decide whether to switch to Eco Temperatures
  • Allow you to choose an automatic or manual schedule
  • Remember your Wi-Fi information
  • Other basic functions

Because your Nest Thermostat stays connected to your WiFi, it will continue to communicate with Google’s servers. This means it can still receive software updates. It will also still send data and its originating IP address to Google. Make sure to disconnect your Thermostat from your WiFi if you do not want data logging and software updates to continue.

Begin your Smart Home experience by trying one of Google’s Nest Home products like the Learning Thermostat. Not only is it a cool and fun device to use, but it also can help you save energy in your home. Make sure to visit the Google Store to learn more about the Nest Thermostat and other products.

We recommend testing your connection after you sync the devices. Try changing the temperature, arming your security system, activating your camera, or verifying whichever Nest product you’ve added.

Try a few of these voice commands or a voice command related to your Nest product:

“OK, Google, set the thermostat to 73.”“OK, Google, show me the front door.”

“OK, Google, arm my system.”

Once you’ve tested your new Nest product, you can control it through your voice and check in on it through the Google Home app. When your Nest is connected, play around with your system to tailor it to your needs.

What to do if Nest is already connected to an account?

If you’re facing the dreaded “This Thermostat is connected to an account” error when trying to access your Nest Thermostat’s entry key, you came to the right place.

The Nest Thermostat is a life-changing smart gadget, but it can be finicky to set up.

Thankfully, we have the solution you’re looking for.

Here are a few ways to reset or fix the entry key on your Nest Thermostat:

  1. Check the Nest server status.
  2. Change the firewall settings on your WiFi router.
  3. Restart the Nest Thermostat.
  4. Perform a complete factory reset on the Nest Thermostat.
  5. Contact the previous owner to unpair the Thermostat.
  6. Check the WiFi router for compatibility.
  7. Contact Nest support to replace your Nest Thermostat.

This article will cover the solutions mentioned above to fix your Nest Thermostat entry key so that you can pair it with the rest of your smart home network.

1. Check the Nest Server Status

Before you spend the next couple of hours figuring out why you can’t get an entry key, you should check the Nest server status first. You can do this by clicking the following link: status.nest.com

The Setup & Pairing and the Nest Thermostat systems must show OK.

You can’t retrieve an entry key if the servers are down.

This is because the Nest Thermostat relies on the cloud for authentication.

Even though the Nest Thermostat is connected to your home network, it needs a stable Internet connection.

If the Nest servers are online, check your WiFi router.

You can’t get an entry key in the middle of an Internet outage.

Restarting your WiFi router should fix your Internet connection.

2. Change the Firewall Settings on Your WiFi Router

Google explains that high-security firewall settings on your network can block the Nest Thermostat.

Firewalls are set in place to protect your network from attackers.

However, an overactive firewall can block your devices from retrieving data from servers.

If you’re tapping on the Nest Account option on your Thermostat, but the entry key isn’t showing up, it’s probably the firewall.

The solution for this is to disable or lower the firewall security settings or, even better, to whitelist your Nest Thermostat.

You can do this in your router’s settings. Here’s how:

  1. Connect to your router through Ethernet on a computer or WiFi on a smartphone or tablet.
  2. Open your web browser and type “192.168.1.1” or “192.168.0.1”. One of these should be the default gateway for your router. If neither are, check your router’s manual.
  3. Log in to your router. The default username and password are “admin” and “password” respectively. Sometimes, the password can be blank. If neither works, check the router’s user manual.
  4. Open the Firewall Settings.
  5. Open the Firewall’s whitelist and type in your Nest Thermostat’s MAC address. You can find it by opening the Nest app > Settings > Select Nest Thermostat > Technical Info > MAC address.
  6. If you can’t whitelist the Nest Thermostat, change the Firewall security level from High/Medium to Low.

I strongly discourage you from completely disabling the firewall.

That’s just asking for trouble.

You’ll give hackers free access to your WiFi if you disable it.

Try accessing your Nest Thermostat entry key now.

3. Restart the Nest Thermostat

If you don’t want to perform a reset because you’ll lose all the preferences your Nest Thermostat learned, restart the device instead.

A restart can fix most issues with entry keys, connectivity, bugs, freezes, etc.

Restarting your Nest Thermostat won’t delete any of your settings.

It’s just like your computer or smartphone.

The Nest Thermostat will turn off and back on to clear any bugs in its memory.

Here’s how to restart your Nest Thermostat:

  1. Press the Thermostat ring.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Use the Thermostat ring to select Reset.
  4. Select the Restart option.

Once the device has restarted, open the Nest Account setting to see your entry key.

4. Perform a Complete Factory Reset on the Nest Thermostat

If all else fails, there’s always the factory reset option.

Unfortunately, a complete reset entails losing all your personalized data and settings.

Nonetheless, a reset is a quick and effective solution that resets the entry key for your Nest Thermostat.

Here’s how to perform a factory reset on the Nest Thermostat:

  1. Press the Thermostat ring.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Use the Thermostat ring to select Reset.
  4. Select All Settings.

If your Nest Thermostat is frozen, remove the batteries from the device and replace them.

On the Nest Thermostat E and Learning Thermostat, pressing and holding the Thermostat for 10 seconds resets all settings.

5. Contact the Previous Owner to Unpair the Thermostat

If you bought a used Nest Thermostat or the device came with your new house, it’s probably connected to the previous owner’s Google account.

If that’s the case, you’ll get a message saying the device is already linked when you try to see the entry key.

The easiest solution is to contact the previous owner.

Kindly ask them to remove the Nest Thermostat from their Google account on the Nest or Home app.

6. Check the WiFi Router for Compatibility

Google states that not all WiFi routers work with the Nest Thermostat.

If your router is incompatible with the Thermostat, you won’t see the entry key.

Since there are thousands of different routers on the market, the easiest way to troubleshoot this is to test another router.

Borrow a WiFi router from a relative or friend and test the Nest Thermostat with it. If you can see the entry key, you’ll have to replace your WiFi router.

7. Contact Nest Support to Replace Your Nest Thermostat

If you just got the Nest Thermostat and can’t see the entry key, you should contact Nest Support.

Electronic devices can be dead on arrival (DOA).

Your Nest Thermostat might seem like it’s working correctly, but it isn’t.

Besides, what’s the purpose of a smart thermostat if you can’t use its “smart” features.

Final Thoughts

A restart or complete factory reset on your Nest Thermostat will reset your entry key.

You should also check your WiFi router’s firewall and your Internet connection.

If the Nest Thermostat doesn’t have Internet access, you can’t pair your smartphone to the Thermostat.
