They are all over 99% accurate in laboratory tests when used from the day your period is due. Some of the tests in the range are so sensitive that they can be used up to 4 days before your period is due .Whether you are trying to get pregnant or trying to keep from getting pregnant, when you miss your period you want to know immediately if you are pregnant or not. Clearblue are the market leaders and these tests are fast, accurate (greater than 99%), reliable and an easy alternative when you require immediate discreet results in the privacy of your own home.

How do I do a Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test?

Please note, these are abbreviated instructions. Always read the in-pack leaflet before carrying out a test.

When you are ready to do your Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test, simply remove the one-piece Test Stick from its individual foil wrapper and take off the cap. With the tip pointing downwards, hold the Absorbent Sampler in your urine stream for 5 seconds. Alternatively, you can collect a sample of your urine in a clean, dry container and immerse the Absorbent Sampler in the urine for 20 seconds only.

When the urine sample is applied to the Absorbent Sampler it is detected by the test. A flashing ‘Wait’ symbol (egg timer) is shown on the Display demonstrating that the test is working correctly. Within 3 minutes the symbol stops flashing and the result will appear.

The Display will show a ‘Pregnant’ or ‘Not Pregnant’ result. This result will continue to be shown on the Display for approximately 24 hours.

How does a Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test work?

When you become pregnant, your body produces the pregnancy hormone, human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG). The amount of hCG in your body doubles every 2 – 3 days, and reaches a maximum at around 7 – 12 weeks into the pregnancy. It stays at a higher than normal level for the rest of the pregnancy, and for up to 3 weeks after giving birth. The level of hCG can be elevated above normal levels for up to 9 weeks if you have had a miscarriage or a termination.

It is this hormone that Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test detects in your urine.  You can use Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test as early as 4 days before your period is due.

With a Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test, an optical reader encased in the Test Stick interprets the result for you and shows your result in words: ‘Pregnant’ or ‘Not Pregnant’.

When can I use a Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test?

Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test can be used up to 4 days before your period is due. If you test before your period is due and get a ‘Not Pregnant’ result, there is still a chance that you may be ‘Pregnant’ but that your hormone level is still not high enough for the test to detect. If testing from the day your period is due, you can test any time of the day.  If testing early, use the first urine of the day.

What is the difference between home tests and those done by a doctor?

Many doctors and clinics use home pregnancy tests to verify the results, in which case they are exactly the same. Occasionally, some women may be given a blood test, but they aren’t very different from home pregnancy tests either. Both types look for the presence of H.C.G. in your body.

What should I do with my results?

If your pregnancy test results are positive, you should consult your doctor to discuss your pregnancy and what steps and precautions should be taken next. In addition, if your test is negative and you still suspect you may be pregnant, you may want to confirm your test results with another home pregnancy test a few days later. If you test too early you may get a negative result because not enough of the H.C.G. hormone has built up in your system.

Can anything affect the results of these tests?

Drinking alcohol, painkillers, oral contraceptives, antibiotics and other common drugs will not affect the result of these tests. Only medicines that contain H.C.G. can produce a false positive result. If you are unsure about your result or your period has still not arrived you should see your doctor for advice.

Background: The home pregnancy market is rapidly evolving. It has moved from detection of pregnancy on the day of missed menstrual bleeding, to detection claims 4 days prior. It is moving from all manual tests to digital tests, with a monitor reading the bands and informing women they are pregnant. A thorough study is needed to investigate the validity of claims and evolving usefulness of devices.

Methods: Studies were proposed to examine the sensitivity and specificity of home tests and their abilities to detect pregnancy. Methods examined the abilities of tests to detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), hyperglycosylated hCG, free β-subunit, a mixture of these antigens in 40 individual early pregnancy urines.

Results: Using a mixture of hCG, hyperglycosylated hCG and free β-subunit typical for early pregnancy, the sensitivity of the First Response manual and digital tests was 5.5 mIU/mL, while the sensitivities of the EPT and ClearBlue brand manual and digital tests was 22 mIU/mL. On further evaluation, the First Response manual and digital tests both detected 97% of 120 pregnancies on the day of missed menstrual bleeding. The EPT manual and digital devices detected 54% and 67% of pregnancies, respectively, and the ClearBlue manual and digital devices detected 64% and 54% of pregnancies, respectively.

Conclusions: First Response manual and digital claim >99% detection on the day of missed menses. The results here suggest similar sensitivity for these two tests. The EPT and ClearBlue manual and digital test make similar >99% claims, the data presented here disputes their elevated claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Clearblue Digital pregnancy test work?

When you are pregnant your body produces the pregnancy hormone hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotrophin). The amount of hCG in your body increases in the early stages of pregnancy. Clearblue can detect tiny amounts of this hormone in your urine. (The sensitivity of this test is 25mlU/ml).Based on the level of hCG in your urine, the Clearblue conception indicator provides an estimate of when you conceived.

How accurate is Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test in detecting pregnancy?

In laboratory tests Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Tests is more than 99% accurate in detecting whether or not you are pregnant, when used from the day your period is due. If you test before your period is due and get a 'not pregnant' result, there is still a chance you may be pregnant.

How accurate is the Clearblue conception indicator?

The conception indicator is 92% accurate at detecting when you conceived. The estimate is based on the level of hCG in your urine. The level of hCG varies from women to women, and it is therefore possible that the conception indicator might occasionally give misleading results. The accuracy of the 'pregnant'/'not pregnant' result is over 99% accurate when testing from the day the period is due.If you are testing more than 6 weeks after conception the conception indicator may give unexpected results. This is because the level of hCG in the urine is too high for the test to provide an accurate estimate of the time since conception.
