How to connect LAN cable to PS4 without router

A Wi-Fi or LAN (Ethernet) connection is crucial for you to make the most out of your PS4. With a stable internet connection, you can play, watch and talk with your friends via the PlayStation Network. Your console can also download the latest app and software updates when it’s connected to the internet.

How to connect LAN cable to PS4 without router

However, longtime users of the PS4 console have reported a problem with the LAN cable connection. Although it’s easy to switch to a Wi-Fi or wireless connection, some users still do prefer a LAN connection due to its stability and consistent speed. This guide will show you how to fix your PS4 when it shows the LAN Cable Not Connected message. If the LAN disconnects while you are fetching data from a Sony datacenter, then you may get the message PlayStation 4 Error Code WS-37469-9.

PS4 LAN Cable Not Connected Fixes

When your PS4’s Ethernet port is not working, it can be quite overwhelming to fix. Fortunately, we listed some of the most effective solutions to the PS4 LAN Not Connected issue. The first thing to do is to check your cable connections; if your Ethernet cable is bent or has a tear, it’s best to replace it since it might be causing this connection issue.

Another trick is to clean your PS4’s Ethernet or LAN ports. Check and dislodge any dust and debris that is stuck inside using a soft brush. Avoid using aggressive brushes and liquids when cleaning all ports to avoid damage and risks of electric shock.

If all cables are in proper condition, along with the ports, you can proceed with trying the fixes below. Make sure to follow every fix until you find the one that’s effective for your console.

Fix #1: Power Cycle your PS4

One of the most common fixes that can work on any glitch or error is power cycling. This resets all apps and other processes of your console that might be causing the LAN Cable Not Connected issue.

To power cycle your PS4, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your console by pressing its Power button until the light goes out.
  2. Next, unplug the Power cable from the socket for ten seconds.
  3. After waiting, plug the Power Cable back again and turn on your PS4.
  4. Check if the problem still exists.

Fix #2: Reboot your Internet Router

Similar to the fix above, you can do a power cycle on your router to reset all incoming and outgoing connections. Some users have said that rebooting their router has solved the PS4 Ethernet Port Not Working issue.

To reboot your internet router, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off your router and disconnect its Power cord from the socket.
  2. Wait for ten seconds to reset all connections.
  3. Insert the Power cord back into the socket and switch on your router.
  4. Next, turn on your PS4 console and go to Settings > Network.
  5. Choose Set Up Internet Connection > Use A LAN Cable.
  6. Select Easy. Your console will now receive an Internet Settings Updated notification shown on the screen.

Fix #3: Set Up a Static IP Address for your PS4

A static IP address is a kind of IP address that does not change or is remembered by your device, its apps, and the websites that you visit. Switching to a static IP address from a dynamic one reportedly helps in solving the PS4 LAN Cable Not Connected issue.

To set up a new static IP address on your PS4, do the following:

  1. Open your PS4 and navigate to Settings > Network > View Connection Status.
  2. Write down or take a picture of the default IP address, Default gateway, and Subnet mask.
  3. Go back and select Setup Internet Connection > Use A LAN Cable.
  4. Next, choose Custom > Manual. Here, you can enter your chosen IP address. Take note that it doesn’t have to be accurate; copy the first three digits of the original IP address, and add the last three digits based on numbers anywhere from 2-255.
  5. Copy the rest of the default network information, such as the Subnet mask and Default gateway.
  6. Set MTU to Automatic and Proxy Server to Do not use.
  7. Restart your console and try connecting through LAN.
  8. Check if the PS4 LAN Cable Not Connected problem persists.

Fix #4: Configure DNS Settings on your PS4

A DNS or Domain Name System is used for finding out a computer’s name and its corresponding IP address. Editing your PS4’s DNS Settings can help reset your connection, therefore eliminating bugs and helping you to solve the Ethernet connection problem on PS4.

To configure DNS Settings on PS4, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on your PS4 console and head to Settings > Network.
  2. Select Setup Network Connection and choose Use A LAN Cable > Custom.
  3. Choose Automatic IP address settings.
  4. When asked for a specific DHCP hostname, leave it blank.
  5. Under the DNS Settings, select Manual.
  6. Set the following DNS values on Primary and Secondary:

Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8

Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

  1. Next, under MTU Settings, choose Automatic.
  2. Set Proxy Server to Do Not Use.
  3. Restart your console. Try connecting your LAN cable and see if the error still shows up.

Fix #5: Rebuild Database of PS4

If your console experiences various errors, including the LAN Cable Not Connected error, a Database Rebuild is an effective solution. It deletes all unnecessary and temporary junk files that might do more harm than good. Also, the duration of a Database Rebuild will depend on the number of installed apps and games on your PS4.

To do a Database Rebuild on your PS4, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off your console, then, press and hold the Power button for ten seconds until you hear two consecutive beeps. Your PS4 will now boot in Safe Mode.
  2. Connect your PS4’s DualShock controller via USB cable.
  3. Select Rebuild Database from the list (fifth option).
  4. Wait for the process to complete.
  5. Once it’s done, sign in to your PlayStation account and connect your router’s LAN (Ethernet) cable to the LAN port of your PS4.
  6. See if the error still shows up.

Final Thoughts

LAN connections on PS4 can sometimes have problems. If you’re still experiencing the same issues, you can try plugging in your LAN cable to your computer’s Ethernet port and see if it receives a connection. Once it receives one without any problems, the fault may be on your PS4’s Ethernet ports or software.

If your PS4 has more than one Ethernet port, try every port and see which one works. However, when the problem is on your ISP’s side, it’s best to contact their customer service for technical assistance.
