Why is DaVinci Resolve 17 so laggy
Fri Jun 25, 2021 6:21 pm

Hello everyone,

I am having trouble playing back my (proxied) footage in Davinci Resolve (free version), although using a capable PC. The audio is very choppy and I have a solid 0-1 FPS playing back (no joke). It tells me there are more FPS (with a red dot) but this number only matches the audio's FPS. The audio plays back fine in the fairlight tab - the cut and edit tabs are where the problem occurs.

These are my specs:

Memory PC 2021B450M PRO-M2 MAX (MS-7B84)AMD Ryzen 5 3600xNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER (6 GB of memory), Studio-Driver Version 462.59 (latest version)32 GB DDR4 RAM (2x16 GB)480GB SSD with 116 GB spaceWindows 10Davinci Resolve 17.2.1 Build 12 (latest version).

During my choppy playback the task manager shows following workload (while also operating google chrome as I am writing this, there is basically no difference when I close chrome):

20% CPU34% RAM13% GPU maximum, most of the time around 5%.It just seems odd to me that the resources are not fully used even though the playback is super choppy.

Now to the footage and settings:

This particular footage is 1280x1440 and I have cropped it to a 1280x720 canvas resolution. I inserted the clip twice and used the top part of my clip for gameplay and the bottom part for my camera. I cropped the camera into place to sit nicely in a corner of my gameplay. So basically I use two clips.I have had this problem with regular 720p footage (without weird cropping and using the clip twice) as well, it was still kind of possible to work with it but this time (due to the larger size?) it is plain impossible, which is why I am seeking help here.My footage is recorded in 60 fps, the timeline fps are also set to 60 fps. I have created proxy media and enabled "Use proxy media if available".I have not edited anything yet in this case at all - No color effects, no text - Just cropping the two clips into place. I have roughly 20 minutes of footage. In other projects the problems were getting worse with more effects and it would not even play back in half speed when I had things like adjustment clips or text on the timeline.

Things I have tried:

- Run as administrator- Pre render files (Playback gets a tiny bit better but is still awful, and as soon as I make a cut it has to render again)- Switch from "game ready" driver of GPU to "studio" version (Version 462.59)

Preferences:

- Use GPU for Blackmagic RAW decode is enabled- GPU processing mode CUDAI hope that someone can help me out here, I am driving insane trying to edit my projects... If I have forgotten any information please let me know, I will deliver ASAP!Thank you so much in advance,

Why is DaVinci Resolve 17 so laggy
Wed Apr 20, 2022 10:33 am

I'm having issues with da Vinci resolve 17, when I'm editing everything is just lagging for me, from moving clips to moving different tabs to adjusting sound, everything is extremely slow and laggy I spoke to windows thinking maybe it was a problem with my computer they checked it and my computer is fine. it only laggs when da Vinci is open so they said it was a da Vinci problem also I've tried rendering and caching the clips and googling how to make this problem stop but nothing seems to work, when I have da Vinci resolve open not only does da Vinci lag but my whole computer from opening file explorer to Google.

When da Vinci is open it's like my computer from 2004. Please help

ever since i updated to davinci resolve 17 from 16 the software just has been all out laggy and i tried EVERYTHING its so annoying like i just want to edit my videos bruhh and also the reason why i moved from 16 to 17 is because the software kept crashing on random times and i lost a video i put so much time and effort on wow and now the playback of my videos and the software is just all out being shitty i cant with this anymore i jsut feel like crying bruh and my pc isnt even bad aswell, im using a 16gb ram rtx 2070 super gpu and my processor is a ryzen 5 3600xt

When it comes to editing inside of DaVinci Resolve, a lot of computer power is required to get a smooth editing experience. Even though having a fast editing machine is important, beginner filmmakers may not have the luxury of editing on pro-level workstations or laptops. In fact, some novice editors may be stuck with machines built before 2016.

While this may be the case for some, having an old computer doesn’t mean it’s impossible to have a workable experience while editing. In fact, if you’re using such a system, there are a couple of steps you can take to vastly improve your playback performance. Seasoned colorist Alex Jordan of Learn Color Grading has a few useful tips on the topic.

The first step in improving your Resolve playback performance is to change the optimized media and render cache settings. To do this, go to your Settings panel. Under the Master Settings Tab, look for the section labeled Optimized Media and Render Cache.

If you are a Windows user, change both to DNxHR SQ. If you’re using an older Mac, you’ll need to use ProRes 422 LT.

Afterward, look below the Render Cache dropdown menu and ensure that the checkbox “Enable background caching after ___ second” is ticked. Also, change the time interval to 1 second. Once you’ve made all the adjustments, click OK.

Next, under the Playback menu, make sure “Use optimized media if available” is enabled. In the same menu, change the Render Cache setting from “None” to “User”.

As explained, these three steps will prepare Resolve to optimize your footage. However, this does not tell the software to actually begin optimizing your clips. You should do this manually by right clicking on a file and choosing “Generate Optimized Media.”

Once you’ve done so, you’ll have to wait for the NLE to render the optimized media. After the process is complete, you will find your scrubbing and playback experience to be much smoother with little to no dropped frames.

Despite you might have your optimized media, you will notice that as you start adding video effects and color nodes, your timeline will once again slow down. This happens on all machines – old or new. To fix this, right click on your clip and select “Render Cache Color Output”.

When you choose this option, a red bar will appear on top of your video that will slowly change to blue. Once the entire bar becomes blue, you’ll be able to add as many effects and image adjustments as you like without affecting playback performance.

It’s important to note that this five-step process is extremely effective – even to the point of making the editing experience on an old laptop a seamless one. In fact, for the whole tutorial, Alex is using a 2013 Sony VAIO laptop equipped with a 2.9GHz Intel Core i7-3520M processor, GeForce GTX640M LE 1GB GPU, and 12GB of RAM.

As old as the machine may be, there are always steps you can take as an editor to ensure that your editing software is optimized for your system. Meanwhile, if you find these tips helpful and want to get deeper into editing and color grading with DaVinci Resolve 16, make sure to check out Alex Jordan’s free courses as well as his special 4th of July Course Bundle that is currently on sale.
