Kardashian said she took time for herself after her divorce from Kanye West, before she intended to pursue anyone romantically

Kim Kardashian didn't rush into her relationship with Pete Davidson. 

Kardashian, 41, revealed she intentionally took some time for herself after her split from Kanye West before pursuing any relationship, let alone the one that's blossomed with the Saturday Night Live comic. 

"I waited a while," Kardashian told TODAY's Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. "I waited, like, a good 10 months before I was ready to open myself up. I think you definitely need that time to yourself, and then once you're ready to get out there I just — I felt like I wanted new energy and something different."

She added that her chemistry with Davidson, 28, "definitely took me by surprise."

Kardashian was first linked to Davidson last October shortly after she hosted SNL. The SKKN founder was spotted holding hands with Davidson on a roller coaster, though a source told PEOPLE they were just friends at the time.

Later, Kardashian said she felt a spark when she kissed Davidson during a sketch on SNL. On a recent episode of The Kardashians, she explained that she reached out to Davidson as a way to jump-start her transition back into life as a single woman post-divorce.

"I text[ed] him," she shared. "I wasn't even thinking like, 'Oh my God, I'm gonna be in a relationship with him.' I was just thinking, 'Heard about this BDE [big d--- energy], need to get out there, I need to jumpstart my...'"

Kardashian trailed off before adding, "I was just basically DTF [down to f---]."

Kardashian was married to West, 45, from 2014 until she filed for divorce in February 2021. She was declared legally single in March. The pair have four children together: North, 9, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 3.

During an episode of The Kardashians, the SKIMS founder admitted she "tried everything" to make the marriage work. 

"If people knew what my relationship really was like, I think they would be like, 'How did this last this long?'" she said. "But I can live with myself knowing that I tried everything humanly possible to make a situation work and so I can walk away feeling absolutely guilt-free."

Kim Kardashian appeared on the Today Show this morning and spoke in candid detail about her over six-month relationship with Pete Davidson. The star confirmed she never expected it to blossom the way it did, and though she isn’t completely opposed to the idea of remarrying someday, she’s “going to be really cautious” about it.

In regard to Davidson, Kardashian said that after filing for divorce from her ex-husband Kanye West in February 2022, “I just took 10 months to just be by myself, and soak it in and figure out what that’s like to be by myself, and then after that I was like, ‘Okay, I’m ready [to date again].’ And it [my romance with Davidson] was so pleasantly unexpected.”

“It feels good to have someone that you can really laugh with and just be yourself with,” she added. “I’m completely, 100 percent myself, and that is just the best feeling. Not that I wasn’t before or anything, but it’s someone that really supports you, but is fun and happy, and it’s great.”

Her first text to Davidson wasn’t very suggestive at all, she revealed during her interview. “I ran into him a little bit before [hosting Saturday Night Live] at the Met [Gala in September]. He gave me really good advice, knowing I was gonna be on it. So, I just reached out and said, ‘Thank you so much for that advice, it was so much fun.’ Just something [casual], leaving it open.”

Now, in a serious relationship again, Kardashian is figuring out her stance on marriage. Fortunately, her faith in love was never shaken. “I think that’s just who I am. I believe in love,” she said. “I would never not believe in love, no matter what you’ve been through. That’s actually something my sisters and I were talking about yesterday, is you can get hard [after breakups and divorce].”

In terms of getting married again, “I think I’m definitely going to be really cautious because I have proven that maybe I’m not the best at it [after three divorces], and I don’t want to make that mistake again. Sometimes I think, ‘Should I just be in one of those relationships like Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell?’ It seems to be working out for them.” Hawn and Russell never got married but have been together for over 39 years.

She also explained when she knew she was finally ready to introduce Davidson to her four children with West. She consulted “a few therapists” and her sister Kourtney Kardashian for advice on how to choose the exact right time to do so.

“I definitely wanted to wait six months and that was the marker,” she said. “It’s different for everyone and different things work for different people. But you just have to do what feels right and try to just be as respectful and cautious as possible.”

Six months into dating Kim Kardashian, 28-year-old Pete Davidson is thinking about his future in a way he hasn’t before, Us Weekly reports. A source told the outlet that Kardashian has prompted the Saturday Night Live comedian to become more of an adult in terms of his actions and decisions. “Kim has also made Pete grow up in a big way and think about his future and business in a huge way,” the source said. “He’s investing, saving and thinking about longevity for the first time. He goes to Kris [Jenner] for advice.”

The source added that Kardashian and Davidson are doing well as a couple, especially since they went red carpet official at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “Kim and Pete are even happier now that they can attend events together and be in public,” the source said. “They love spending as much time together as possible.”

The pair will be spending some time apart due to career demands, so they’re in the midst of preparing for the increased distance. “Pete has some movies coming up that he’ll be leaving to film, so they really have been spending as much time together as possible before he has to leave,” the source said.

Davidson has not appeared on The Kardashians, the family’s new reality show, and won’t during its first season. Kardashian did share her first impressions of Davidson in a recent episode though, as their romantic relationship started. “[He’s] surely the sweetest, nicest human being on the planet,” she told Scott Disick and Ellen DeGeneres at a party that The Kardashians’s crew filmed.
