If you’ve played Pokemon Go during the Go Fest 2021 and Ultra Unlock event, you will undoubtedly have noticed some strange rings in the sky on your Overworld map.
But what are they and what do they do? Here is everything you need to know.

Hoopa rings in Pokemon Go
The portals in the sky were created by Mythical, Hoopa. The clairvoyant / ghost type uses their hoops to create an opening through time and space that allows other ‘monas to travel through it.
In the Ultra Unlock event, new Pokémon were added to Pokémon Go via the rings. For some, including Zacian and Zamazenta from Sword & Shield, this is the first time they have come into the game.
It’s basically just a pretty nice lore that allows Niantic to bring new legendaries and generations into the title and keep it interesting.
What are the portals doing in the sky in Pokemon Go?
As for the sky portals in the game, you will be disappointed if you were hoping they would have some kind of gameplay element in them.
Except that they are pretty to look at, they unfortunately do nothing at all. They are for visual purposes only. We’re sorry.
Somewhat strange, however, is that Hoopa isn’t actually part of Pokemon Go’s Pokedex, which means you can’t catch it or hit it in any way. Maybe this is all an indication of what’s to come?

Part three of Ultra Unlock 2021 ends on August 31st, so Hoopa’s rings are likely to go away by then too.

At this time, the rings have no purpose. Players can’t interact with them, and they’re not currently linked to any form of gaming mechanic, which has disappointed some. They are entirely aesthetic and will have no effect on the player, though they do hover ominously over the globe.
The rings could possibly serve as a hint for what’s to come later in the Season of Mischief for those who understand the background behind the Ultra Unlock event and Hoopa. The rings may eventually have a function, as there is currently a full schedule of events and confrontations planned for this period, with many more to be released during the season.

What is important to know is that in Pokemon go, the map is not updated every day, in realtime. Its only updated once every few months to add pokestops, and remove those who were requested. So if you can see a pokestop as ‘Accepted’ in whatever way you check them, it probably means that it will show up in the next update.
The portals from Ingress and the Pokestops and gyms from Pokémon Go are at the same locations. However, they do seem to have a limitation on the density of portals. Common areas that had dozens of portals in a single location on Ingress have had their numbers reduced so they are more spread out.

So, basically, these portals are visual treats in the game and don’t have any interactive features. It is just a way to show that new Pokemon are arriving in the game, which is a unique one implemented by Niantic. However, this also suggests the fact that Hoopa might be added to Pokemon Go since it has been teased in-game for over a month now.
