What are the Australian Navy values

What are the Australian Navy values
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has developed five core values which define what is important to RAN as a whole and to its people individually, these being:

  • Honour;
  • Integrity;
  • Loyalty;
  • Courage; and
  • Honesty.

To help live out these values, Chief of Navy has endorsed 10 signature behaviours (116 KB PDF). These behaviours reflect the Navy’s desired culture, which supports people during and beyond their service, makes and executes decisions, and empowers everyone to make a respected contribution.

The Navy Values booklet “Serving Australia with Pride” (935.17 KB PDF) was recently updated by Chief of Navy. It not only describes the values in more detail, it also provides more information on the signature behaviours and how they can be implemented.

  • Honour: Honour is the fundamental value on which the Navy’s and each person’s reputation depends. To demonstrate honour demands honesty, courage, integrity and loyalty and to consistently behave in a way that is becoming and worthwhile.
  • Honesty: Honesty is always being truthful, knowing and doing what is right for the Navy and ourselves.
  • Courage: Courage is the strength of character to do what is right in the face of personal adversity, danger or threat.
  • Integrity: Integrity is the display of truth, honesty and fairness that gains respect and trust from others.
  • Loyalty: Loyalty is being committed to each other and to our duty of service to Australia

Today's modern Navy can trace its roots back to 1788 and the colonisation of Australia. Our royal title was bestowed in 1911, and since then the Navy has been active in every ocean in the world.

Personnel in each of the three services live the Defence Values, also known as ‘Our Values’ which underpin everything they do.

The selflessness of character to place the security and interests of our nation and its people ahead of my own.

The strength of character to say and do the right thing, always, especially in the face of adversity.

The humanity of character to value others and treat them with dignity.

The consistency of character to align my thoughts, words and actions to do what is right.

The willingness of character to strive each day to be the best I can be, both professionally and personally.

To live Our Values, our people will:

  • Act with purpose for Defence and the nation;
  • Be adaptable, innovative and agile;
  • Collaborate and be team-focused;
  • Be accountable and trustworthy;
  • Reflect, learn and improve; and
  • Be inclusive and value others.

Our Behaviours

Our Behaviours were designed and developed to enable our personnel to incorporate Our Values into their everyday lives.

To live Our Values, individuals will display Our Behaviours at all times to the best of their ability – It's up to all of us to hold each other to account on our behaviours.

Our Values and Our Behaviours should be used to inform each and every decision we make - if it doesn't fit Our Behaviours - don't do it, or change course so that it does.
