Snapchat no sound when recording

Title. I have had snapchat for a long time, but now, when i want to record with video in the app its self, the video preview has no sound coming from it. I have tried muting/unmuting the sound, turning my ringer on, raising the volume, etc. and still doesnt work. I use phantom for snapchat and whenever i take a video from my camera app and import it into snapchat, the audio works fine. Is there any fix to this? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I am using an iPhone 5, with iOS 7.1.2

EDIT 2: FIXED! Realized I had another tweak that let's you play music while recording in any app, so that's what caused the microphone problem.

In this millennial era full of social media influence, Snapchat is among the most popular social media, next to Instagram and Twitter. Its unique filters, videos, and photos are most loved by its users. In some cases, however, you may discover that there is no audio in your recorded snap videos.

It is frustrating to view videos or stories without any sound. If you are experiencing such a problem, this article is what you need. You will learn why sound is not working on Snapchat and easy step-by-step procedures on how you can fix it.

How to fix Snapchat sound issues

Whether the sound isn’t working or you can’t increase the volume when using Snapchat, these troubleshooting tips should come in handy:

1. Check if your phone is on silent mode

It may seem pretty obvious, but this is the most common reason why there is no sound on your Snapchat videos. People tend to forget that their phone is on silent or vibration mode by accident or you forgot to turn it off. There is no sound from the snap videos or any other app when the phone is on silent mode.

You can fix this by turning off the silent mode in the Settings menu. You can also disable it on the notification panel when you scroll down the screen.

2. Fix the app’s permission

Another reason why there is no audio from your Snapchat videos because the app has been restricted microphone access. You can fix this using the following steps in an Apple device:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Select to Privacy.
  • Go to Microphone.
  • Turn on the toggle that is next to the Snapchat option.

In an Android phone, you should follow the following steps:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Go to Privacy.
  • Tap on Permission.
  • Tap on Microphone.
  • Tap on the Snapchat option and select the option Allow to enable access to the microphone.

3. Turn up the phone’s volume

You can check whether the device’s volume is low by pressing the Volume Up button on the right side of the phone. By doing so, you will get sound on Snapchat videos and stories.

4. Restart your phone

Your videos may not have sound because your phone’s RAM is excessively used. It could also be that the application has not loaded correctly. A simple reboot will fix this minor issue.

For an Apple device, you can restart it by doing this:

  • Press and release the Volume Up button.
  • Press and release the Volume Down button.
  • Press the Power button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

You can restart an Android phone by simultaneously pressing the Power and Volume down button until a restart notification appears on the device. Tap on it and wait for the phone to restart.

5. Turn off Bluetooth

Your device may have unknowingly been connected to a Bluetooth speaker or device such as your AirPods. The problem comes in when recording videos since it requires a Bluetooth speaker to record. It may also be playing sound from a Bluetooth device that is not near you.

In this case, you should turn off Bluetooth. You can turn it off at the notification panel that appears as you scroll down the screen or:

  • Go to the Settings app.
  • Select Bluetooth.
  • Switch off the Bluetooth toggle on the right side.

6. Reinstall or update your Snapchat app

The reason behind your Snapchat audio not working maybe because the application is outdated. It may experience glitches and bugs. To update the app, go to the Google Play Store for Android users and App Store for Apple users. Next, tap on the Snapchat app and select update.

You can also choose to delete the application and reinstall it. Either way, your account will not be deleted and all your videos and photos will remain the same.

Turn up the volume

The issue where sound is not working on Snapchat is minor and easy to solve. If the above troubleshooting methods do not work, you can contact the Snapchat customer service via email. Remember to provide all the information regarding the issue so that Snapchat can help you solve it.

If you suspect that your device has a problem, contact a phone repairer to diagnose the problem and fix it. Once fixed, you will hear the audio on your videos and stories clearly and audibly.

What happened to the sound on Snapchat ??!? Let's get that volume turned up so you can record a new snap with sound and hear your friend's snap from last night.

If you landed on this page you’ve run into some issues with audio on Snapchat, either because you tried to record a Snap and there was no sound or you tried to watch a Snap and couldn’t hear anything.

We’ll tackle both issues with steps you should take to get that sound turned up!

Skip Ahead:

No Snapchat Sound When Recording ?

This is frustrating when you record an awesome new snap but when replaying it you find out the video was recorded without any sound. The most likely reason is there is some issue with your microphone, causing no sound to be recorded. Let’s dive in below to see how to fix this.

This is the first thing I’d recommend trying. Make sure Snapchat has access to your microphone by following these steps.

  1. Open Settings on your phone
  2. Tap Privacy
  3. Tap Microphone
  4. Toggle On the microphone for Snapchat

Method 2: Turn Off Bluetooth

These days a lot of us can unknowingly be connected to a Bluetooth speaker or another Bluetooth device. This is helpful to play music externally but can cause some issues when recording as your iPhone may want to record using the Bluetooth speaker. Follow these steps to turn off Bluetooth.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap Bluetooth
  3. Toggle Bluetooth OFF

Method 3: Close Everything

If the two methods above are not working, I recommend trying this option. This should work to get your sound on if the two methods above don’t.

  1. Logout of Snapchat by tapping your bitmoji at the top left, then gear icon at top right, scroll down and hit Logout.
  2. Closeout of Snapchat by swiping up and to the right on the iPhone homepage. Then swipe up on the Snapchat app to close it
  3. Turn off your phone
  4. Restart your phone and try to take the Snap again, hopefully, this time with sound!

If you tried the 3 methods above and none of them worked then I think it’s time to go with the nuclear option. You should uninstall or delete the app and reinstall it to wipe the settings and potential bugs.

  1. Tap and hold the Snapchat icon until the little “x” appears
  2. Tap the “x” so that you delete and uninstall the app
  3. Open the App Store and search for Snapchat
  4. Install a fresh copy of Snapchat and login

We’re betting that if you followed the 4 methods above you’ve fixed the Snapchat sound issue for recording. Let us know through the feedback icons below if you still have issues.

No Snapchat Sound When Watching Snaps ?

You go to open a Snap and it even has the little sound emoji indicating that sound is a must to fully enjoy this. But when you go to play it, you don’t hear anything. Unfortunately, this is all too common on Snapchat but is easily fixed. Simply follow these steps!

While this issue isn’t always specific to Snapchat, for some reason it happens more often on Snapchat than other apps. Thankfully, there are some foolproof ways to diagnose and fix the error.

Method 1: Turn your volume up

This is where I’d recommend starting, your volume could simply be mute.

  1. Swipe down from the top right of your iPhone screen to bring up a variety of options
  2. Slide the volume indicator up to the maximum level

Method 2: Disable Silent Mode

You may have put your phone on silent mode when you walked into class and forgot to ever turn it back on. This is an easy mistake to make but thankfully it’s just as easy to fix!

  1. Swipe down from the top right of your iPhone screen to bring up options.
  2. Check to see if the moon icon is turned on (purple moon with white background) and if so tap it to turn “do not disturb” mode off.
  3. Another way to silent your phone is if your iPhone or Android has a physical volume button on the side of it. If so, click the volume up button about a dozen times and toggle the volume button to on from vibrate mode.

Method 3: Turn Off Bluetooth

When listening to a Snap or a story your phone may be secretly playing the sound through a connected Bluetooth speaker that you can’t hear or is turned very low. This means the sound is playing but just through some other device. In that case, let’s turn off Bluetooth.

  1. Open the Settings app on your phone
  2. Tap Bluetooth
  3. Toggle the Bluetooth OFF

Method 4: Close Everything & Reboot – Last Resort

If the 3 options above didn’t work to enable sound again, let’s try the “kitchen sink” option by closing everything, logging out and rebooting your phone.

  1. Logout of Snapchat through the setting icon from your profile page
  2. Close the app so that it is not running in the background
  3. Turn off and reboot your phone so that you’re starting from a clean slate

Method 5: Nuclear Option – Uninstall Snapchat

If none of the options above work, then I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Snapchat. This should fix any bugs or issues you may have. Perhaps it was simply a faulty software install.

  1. Tap and hold on the Snapchat app icon
  2. Once the little “x” appears tap it and that will delete or uninstall the app from your iPhone
  3. Head to the App Store and search for Snapchat and reinstall the app
  4. Login to the new Snapchat and test the sound out again

With those 5 methods, we think for sure you’ll be able to hear sound on your friends Snap story. Let us know if you still have issues using the feedback buttons below. We’re happy to hear from you and if something else worked!

How To Record A Snapchat Video Without Sound

Sometimes people just don’t want any sound on their Snapchat video. Maybe you’re in a busy crowded place and you don’t think the background noise helps out. You can easily disable the sound, we’ll show you how.

  1. Open the Snapchat app and start recording a video
  2. You will record the entire video that you want to capture on Snapchat.
  3. After you release your finger and stop recording you will notice a little speaker icon at the bottom left of the screen.
  4. Simply tap on the little speaker emoji and it should change to a speaker with an “x” next to it. That means Snapchat has removed the sound from the video so it won’t play with any audio
