Display names VS usernames: What’s the difference

A username is a unique name that Roblox identifies users as an individual. It is created by users themselves when they first sign up. Although users are allowed to change their usernames, it costs 1000 Robux (approximating to $12), which isn’t too cheap.

A display name is the name that appears above the in-game character’s head, in player lists and in chats. Usernames and display names have been the very same thing – until very recently, Roblox announced that the feature of display names would be available for free to players. So hooray if you got a username that you badly wish to change!

How to get a display name on Roblox

The feature of display names is a very recent one and it’s currently only available in Germany and other parts of Europe.

If you’ve received the update, you can follow the steps below to get a display name:

  1. Navigate to Roblox official website and sign in to your account.
  2. In the upper right corner of your screen, click the gear icon > Settings.
  3. You’ll see both your Display Name and Username under your profile.
  4. Click the Edit icon next to the Display Name and change it as you like.

A Roblox Display Name means that as well as customizing the appearance of your avatar, you can also determine what name is seen by other players and will appear in different areas of the game too. It's possible that you were a bit quick to choose your permanent Username for your Roblox account, or now some time has passed and your tastes have changed it may no longer accurately reflect your personality. Don't worry though as this is where your Display Name comes in, allowing you to edit how you're seen to others in the virtual world while still retaining your original account. With the in mind, here's everything you need to know about how to get or change your Roblox Display Name.

Your Roblox Display Name works differently to your Username, as a Username is unique to each account and is marked with an @ symbol at the start, so it can always be used to identify a specific player. Your Display Name, on the other hand, doesn't have to be unique within the game and you can change it regularly, which gives you much more scope to be creative and express yourself. Once your Roblox Display Name has been set, you'll see it in places such as your profile and chat, in search and people lists, as well as hovering above your avatar's head while you're in an experience.

To get or change a Roblox Display Name, you should first log in to your Account Info (opens in new tab) page under Settings, then select the edit button next to the Display Name entry above your Username. Type in your new Display Name, then press Save to lock it in – make sure you're happy with it first, as you can only change it once every seven days.

There are some restrictions on what you can pick for your Roblox Display Name, so bear these in mind when deciding on a new handle:

  • Display Names must be 3-20 characters long
  • Display Names can only include letters, numbers, and underscores
  • Display Names cannot match the Usernames of high-profile users
  • Display Names need to pass the Community Rules (opens in new tab) text filter

Basically, as long as your chosen Roblox Display Name isn't offensive, and you're not trying to impersonate any well-known players, then you shouldn't have any problems. Enjoy rocking your new Display Name, and remember – if you decide you don't like it any more, you can change it every week.
