How to fix underwire poking out swimsuit

Isn’t it frustrating to spend $50+ for a good bra, only to have the underwire poke through, stabbing you with every move you make? Ugh. I finally got smart and figured out how to fix a broken underwire bra myself.

In the past, I’ve thrown away these bras without a second thought, thinking that was the end of the bra. Wrong! Today I’m going to share my simple solution with you.

Don’t throw away those $50 bras. Instead, just spend 5 minutes and $2 to fix them yourself.

I spent about 5 minutes to fix my broken underwire bra that this recently happened to, and now it’s back in business. So much better than throwing it out!

I bought upholstery thread at Joanns for around $2 (regular price is around $3, and I used a 40% off coupon). You can find it with the regular thread.

I used the upholstery thread because it’s much much thicker and stronger than regular thread, and I only want to have to repair this bra once.

You’ll also need a tiny piece of duck tape.

Step 1. Pull out the underwire a little bit through the hole it is poking through. Use a tiny piece of duck tape to cover up the sharp end of the metal underwire, so it will be more difficult for it to poke through again.

Don’t use too much tape, or it won’t fit back through the hole. Push the underwire back through the hole as far as you can.

Step 2. Thread your needle with upholstery thread. Start stitching under the hole, and all the way up and over the hole.

I used more stitches than I probably needed to, but I’d rather do a really good job once than have to do this multiple times.

I stitched under the wire, and then up and over. Tie a knot at the end when you are finished.

Step 3. Apply some fabric glue or clear nail polish over the entire stitched surface. This will give the thin material some extra protection from the wire poking through again.

I fixed my bra and it’s working just like before- no sharp stabbing for me!

There’s nothing more annoying than the feeling you get when the wire in your favorite underwire bra starts to poke through. Many have said it’s like your best friend stabbing you in the chest. Or your greatest support letting you down. It’s almost a betrayal of sorts. After all, you’ve been through ups and downs together for years. (literally).

If you find yourself getting stabbed in the chest by a pesky underwire, here’s a trick to fix a bra that will save you some pain and extend the life of that favorite bra just a little bit longer.

Items needed for Underwire Bra Repair

- Moleskin (don’t worry it’s not made from actual moles)
- Bra with a protruding underwire
- Scissors

The other day I put on my favorite bra. I tend to have many of the same style, but only wear one or two! Am I the only one who does this?

To my disappointment my favorite bra had given out, to put it nicely. How annoying is it to spend $50 or more on a bra and then have a protruding underwire? The thought of how to repair an underwire kept popping in my head every time the wire poked me. It’s like it was saying “fix me” with every stab to the chest.

Now look closely, there’s that sneaky, painful, annoying piece of underwire which has broken through the fabric. I dealt with the pain for a few days and then I was talking to my husband about it and he said, “Just throw it away.” “What?” I replied. ” Throw away my favorite bra, and then have to go get a new one, with kids? Hmm, let me think about that one.” Uhh.”NO”

Then I remembered I had a whole baggy full of moleskin left over from my husband’s many years of road marches in the Infantry. Ladies, this is not made from real moles. I’ve been asked that ALOT! It made from synthetic felt material. No moles were harmed! I promise!

I figured this stuff is really soft and sticky on the back and guess what… it’s nude.. it should match perfectly on this bra. Maybe at least it will work for one day. Maybe this is the answer of How To Repair An Underwire Bra.

First, I worked the wire back in to the casing with my fingers. Be careful some of these wires are super sharp. This part can be tricky but you really want to shove it back in there really well.

Look closely, you can no longer see the wire protruding.. that’s a good thing. Now some holes are so big that you may want to dab a little super glue there first, let it dry then add the moleskin.

Now that you have the wires shoved back into the casing. (And yes sometimes the wires will break through on both sides. ) Go ahead and cut a small strip of moleskin, about an inch long is enough.

Using my thumbs I smoothed the moleskin a few times. Your body heat will make the glue adhere to the fabric. Hopefully creating a bond that will allow the patch to stick for several days.

Isn’t it amazing how one little problem can cause so much annoyance? What I love even more is finding a simple inexpensive solution that not only saves my favorite bra but extends the life of it!
