How to prepare 0.01m naoh solution

Preparation and standardisation of 0.1 M Sodium Hydroxide using Benzoic acid and Thymolphthalein solution as indicator.

  • Take about 100ml of distilled water in a cleaned and dried 1000 ml volumetric flask.
  • Add about 4.2 gm of Sodium hydroxide with continues stirring.
  • Add more about 700ml of distilled water, mix and allow to cool to room temperature.
  • Make up the volume 1000 ml with distilled water. Mix solution thoroughly.
  • Keep the solution for at least an hour and then carry out the standardization.

  • Accurately weigh about 0.5 g of potassium biphthalate, previously crushed lightly and dried at 120° for 2 hours.
  • Dissolve in 75 ml of carbon dioxide free water.
  • Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein, and titrate with the sodium hydroxide solution to the production of a permanent pink color.
  • Each 20.42 mg of potassium biphthalate is equivalent to 1 ml of 0.1N sodium hydroxide.

Molar mass of NaOH is roughly 40 g/mol. That is solution is 1N NaOH when 40g NaOH is dissolved in 1L water. Here, molarity and normality will be same. Procedure for Preparation of 0.1M NaOH Solution by using sodium hydroxide pellets

  1. Take dry and cleaned 1000ml volumetric flask.
  2. Add into it 4 grams or 4.2 grams of sodium hydroxide pellets.
  3. Add 100ml of distilled water and shake the flask to dissolve the sodium hydroxide pellets.
  4. Allow to cool the solution at room temperature. (Solution will be hot after the addition of water)
  5. Make up the volume up to 1000ml with distilled water and mixed the solution thoroughly.
  6. Keep the solution for an hour to cool at room temperature.

Procedure for Preparation of 0.1M NaOH Solution from 1M NaOH

0.1M NaOH solution is 10 times less concentrated than 1M NaOH solution.

  1. Take a 1000ml dry and cleaned volumetric flask.
  2. Transfer 10ml of 1M NaOH solution into a 1000ml volumetric flask.
  3. Make up the volume up to 1000ml with distilled water and mixed well.

These are the two ways how to prepare 0.1M NaOH solution. But to get the exact Molarity of the solution, titration needs to perform.
