How do I share a link without preview?

Every time I paste a YouTube video link like below:

OneNote 2019 creates a preview.

All I want is a simple link like the one below:

My only solution is to press control + z to undo, then it fixes the format. However, I wish there was a setting somewhere that would change the default pasting of a video?

The preview does not include a website / link thumbnail, however it does show you what the target link title is. Also, if you are using a URL shortener, the preview will still give you the link page title. However, it does not remove the URL redirect, so you may still receive spam or phishing. The preview doesn't add much protection and it takes longer to send a link because the preview is being generated, so you may do better if you turn off the link preview in iMessages.

There is no built-in setting in the Messages app that allows you to turn off link preview in iMessages. You have to use a small but simple trick to do it and it can only be done manually. The trick is to add a full dot / dot before and after the link. For example; If you want to link someone to Google.com, you must enter it as follows;

The link will be sent immediately and will not be accompanied by a preview. You and your recipient will not see the periods you added before and after the link. When either of you tap on the link, it will open normally in Safari. This trick will probably work in iMessages on macOS as well.

Obviously, this is not the most intuitive way to submit links. The clipboard allows you to copy and paste links so you don't have to switch to the keyboard to send one, however this trick forces you to use the keyboard. It also doesn't work if you use the share sheet on iOS to send a link.

Why this works is anyone's guess. The same trick doesn't work in other messaging apps that show link previews. For example, we tried the same trick on both WhatsApp and Facebook. In any case, adding the two full stops made no difference and the previews were generated the same as always. This may have to do with the way iMessages reads a link, which means that in the future Apple could change it by making hacking obsolete. Perhaps someone could develop an iMessage app specifically for this, but that would probably add too many steps to the process that most iOS users would be comfortable with.

In an ideal world, Apple should add an option to disable link preview in iMessages.

It's easy to share web content like articles, pages, and tweets in Slack. When you share a link, you'll see a preview of the content just below your message. If you don't want to see link previews, you can turn them off.

To share a link in Slack, copy and paste the URL into the message field and send. Most links will automatically expand to show a preview of the web page. Here's an example from the desktop app:

Tip: You can create hyperlinks in your messages to give links a cleaner look. To learn more, visit Format your messages.

When previews don't display

Here are some reasons your link may not expand to show a preview:

  • The link contains no preview data. If the web page doesn't include the necessary embedded data, the preview won't expand.
  • You linked to a private page or file. For example, you won't see a preview of password-protected YouTube or Vimeo videos.
  • It was recently posted by another member of your workspace. No attachment will expand if that link was shared in the same conversation within the past hour.
  • You haven’t added the Twitter app yet. If Twitter URLs don’t expand to show the full tweet, add the Twitter app to your workspace.
  • It links to audio or video hosted by a service we haven't not added to our allowlist. We're working to approve more services in future.
  • http:// was not included. Try adding http:// and your link should expand.
  • Your message contains more than five links. If more than five links are included, they won't expand.

  1. From your desktop, hover over the link preview.
  2. Click the  that appears on the left side of the link.

Note: The option to remove link previews is not available on the Slack mobile apps.

If you’d prefer not to see previews for shared links, you can adjust your settings:

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Messages & media in the left sidebar.
  4. Below Inline media & links, uncheck the boxes next to Show images and files from linked websites and Show text previews of linked websites.

Note: For some apps and integrations, link previews won't be disabled when the options above are unchecked.

Awesome!

In Summary. If you have one or more website addresses that you would like to display as text in a Message rather than a thumbnail preview snippet thingy, simply begin the first line with a period (“dot”), and they will display as written.
Disable the Link Preview feature for yourself.
Click on the Gear icon in the top right corner (to the left of your profile image)..
Open the Options page:.
Within Options, navigate to Mail > Layout > Link preview:.
Uncheck the Preview links in email check box..
Click Save..
An app or social media platform downloads the link content and generates the preview. The receiving app then shows the preview. It doesn't need to open the link, so potentially malicious content hosted on the linked website doesn't reach the user right away.
